In this article it talks about the differences in NAEP testing and the tests that are given by the state to the students on their levels of reading. In this article it talks about how teachers all over don’t spend enough time reviewing on the reading and literacy with their students and it causes the students to start falling behind each year. This article talks about that teachers are more focused on working with the textbook rather than on the testing that is being done. On tests, the students are scoring well because the bar is set very low, but it does not help the students to their benefit. The NAEP test helps challenge the students and it is exactly what the student’s need. It will help them do better and it sets the bar higher in which they need to strive harder to pass this test.
-Why wouldnt the states make it mandatory for the school districts to make the teachers focus more on the testing rather than the textbooks?

All too often you see teachers use the textbook as the only resource in the classroom and in many ways this is not good. Not only does it take away from teachers focusing on testing but it also doesn't engage the students as much as if you were to use either interactive learning methods or even to incldue technology.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what Sarah said, because it is important to use other resources than the textbook. The testing also helps them apply their knowledge so it is a matter of assessment as well.
ReplyDeleteI feel that it is a combination of teaching from the text and teaching to the test that teachers need to focus on staying away from. In reading especially we are too busy trying to be sure that our students become fluent readers that we sometimes loose the important messages in the text. When teaching students all of the elements that make reading important students should then be able to pass these dreaded exams.
